Abstract

This research was conducted to investigate willingness to communicate English language among the students of Darul Ulum Islamic boarding school. It was aimed at two folds of research question. First, it seeks to find out how is the student’s willingness in communicating in English language. Second, it attempt to identify the factors which influence the student’s willingness in speaking English in Darul Ulum boarding school. The study employed qualitative research approach to explore student’s willingness to communicate in English. The participant of study were the students from Darul Ulum Islamic boarding school that recommended by English teacher. To investigate the student’s willingness, an observation checklist and interview question was used as a research instrument. The students activities inside and outside the class were observed based on observation checklist and each of students were interviewed based on interview questions. The results of this research showed the frequency of student’s willingness and the factors that affected them. Based on research question 1, the willingness of some students is high and some other is medium. Based on research question 2, the factors that make students willing are self-willingness and environment’s influenced. Also, the factors that often makes the students unwilling to speak, that is afraid of making mistakes and wrong pronunciation. Thus, this research is beneficial for both teachers and students in gaining their awareness and willingness in speaking English.
