Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the approaches that English lecturers in Department of English Language Education Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, UIN Ar Raniry use in teaching Basic Writing course and the challenges that they face in the classroom. Four English Basic Writing lecturers participated in this study. The data was collected by using interview and analyzed it by using thematic analysis technique. The results showed that the process oriented teaching of writing was dominated used in teaching Basic Writing. Their main reason was it is effective for teaching Basic Writing. Furthermore, the lecturers faced some challanges in teaching English Basic Writing class such as students’ lack of nglish grammar, students’ need, students’ motivation, different level of student, and limited time.
