Abstract

This study is entitled “The Use of Metaphor in The Jakarta Post”. Theaim of this study is to analyze the use of metaphor in The Jakarta Post newspaper in order to find out the type of metaphor and describe the contextual meaning in each metaphor. The analysis was carried out based on the theory of Zoltan Kovecses who divided the metaphor into three types, namely structural, ontological and orientational. In this textual study, Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) was used to identify and analyze the metaphors. The headlines of The Jakarta Post newspaper which were published in February 22nd – 28th, 2017 become the unit of analysis. The result of this study shows that the dominant metaphors which are used in the headlines areontological and orientational metaphors. The findings of contextual meaning analysis of each metaphor show that the identified structural metaphors use the concept of business in terms of war, journey, health and farm; the identified ontological metaphors use personification in delivering messages; the rest identified orientational ones use spatial orientation such Up-Down in conveying the messages.
