Abstract

The concept of kafa’ah in Islamic marriage has undergone transformation along with social changes. This study analyzes the shift in the understanding of classical kafa’ah among Generation Z, particularly family law students at UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh. This study used mixed methods, collecting data through questionnaires with 100 respondents, initial interviews with 30 informants, and observation. The results show that although the basic elements of kafa’ah such as religion, lineage, wealth, profession, and freedom from defects are still considered relevant, contemporary criteria such as life vision, education, hobbies, and gender equality have become new priorities. This shift is significantly influenced by globalization, digital media, and gender equality. Generation Z adapts traditional concepts by integrating modern values without abandoning the essence of religion. These findings recommend the development of Islamic family law that is more contextual and responsive to generational dynamics.
