Abstract
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION AND BODY DISSATISFACTION ON FEMALE STUDENTS IN THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS AND ISLAMIC BUSINESS, UIN AR-RANIRY ABSTRACT
This study aims to determine the relationship between social media addiction and body dissatisfaction among female students at the Faculty of Economics and Islamic Business, UIN Ar-Raniry, Banda Aceh. The background of this study is the increasing phenomenon of body dissatisfaction influenced by beauty standards on social media, particularly TikTok, which has become one of the most popular platforms among teenagers and young adults. The research method used was quantitative with a correlational approach. The sample consisted of 202 female students at the faculty of economic and islamic business aged 18–25 years, who actively utilised TikTok and met the criteria of using social media for more than six hours per day. Data were collected using two scales: the TikTok Addiction Scale, modified from Andreassen's theory and the Body Dissatisfaction Scale based on the theory of Cooper, Taylor, Cooper, and Fairburn. Hypothesis testing revealed a significant positive correlation between TikTok addiction and body dissatisfaction (r = 0.538, p < 0.000). This means that the higher the level of TikTok addiction, the higher the body dissatisfaction experienced by students. The categorization test results showed that TikTok addiction among female students in the high category was (23,8%) TikTok addictin was mostly in the moderate category (72,3%) and TikTok addiction in the low category was only (4%). Meanwhile, Body dissatisfaction among female university students in the high category was only (1%), body dissatisfaction was mostly in the moderate category (70.8%), and body dissatisfaction in the lowest category (28,2%).
