Understanding Logical Fallacies In English Through The Lens Of Political Speeches By Israeli Government

Logical fallacies can be used in political speech narratives which are important to examine because they are often used in political speech narratives which can influence public understanding. This study examines the use of logical fallacies in English-language political speeches delivered by Israeli government leaders in relation to the Palestinian resistance. The research focuses on identifying the types of logical fallacies used and explaining how these fallacies function as rhetorical strategies to shape international perception. The data consist of selected speeches by Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, delivered between 2023 and 2024 and obtained from official YouTube sources. Using a qualitative research design, this study applies Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) based on Teun A. van Dijk’s framework, and macrostructure. Research results reveal that Israeli political leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog, and Minister of Defense Yoav Galant frequently utilized various logical fallacies in their public speeches. These include false dilemma, red herring, and hasty generalization. These fallacies serve not only as rhetorical tools but also as ideological strategies aimed at simplifying complex issues, shifting blame, and evoking emotional responses from international audiences. Furthermore, the use of these fallacies contributes significantly to shaping global narratives. Through emotive language, selective historical framing, and strategic exaggeration, Israeli leaders have been able to position their country as a constant victim of terror while obscuring or downplaying Palestinian suffering.
