Abstract

The development of microcontroller technology has increased the need for practical learning media that can help students understand the integration of hardware, software, and serial communication in embedded systems. However, the learning of Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C) communication in the Microprocessor Systems course is still predominantly theoretical and lacks instructional tools that demonstrate its practical implementation in an integrated system. This study aims to develop a microcontroller-based parking monitoring teaching aid as a learning medium for I2C communication in the Microprocessor Systems course. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE development model, consisting of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Data were collected using validation questionnaires administered to two media experts and two subject-matter experts. The data were analyzed descriptively by converting the Likert-scale scores into feasibility percentages. The results showed that the teaching aid was successfully developed and all system components functioned according to the design. The media expert validation obtained a feasibility percentage of 92.50%, categorized as Highly Feasible, while the subject-matter expert validation obtained 90.00%, also categorized as Highly Feasible. The implementation results demonstrated that the ESP32 microcontroller, infrared sensors, I2C LCD, and servo motor operated in an integrated manner according to their respective functions. Unlike an Internet of Things (IoT) system, which primarily emphasizes internet connectivity and remote data exchange, the developed teaching aid focuses on demonstrating the practical implementation of I2C communication between the microcontroller and peripheral devices within an embedded system. Therefore, the developed microcontroller-based parking monitoring teaching aid is considered highly feasible for supporting I2C communication learning in the Microprocessor Systems course.
