The Use of a Visual Dictionary in Teaching Vocabulary to Elementary School Students (A Descriptive Study of Fourth Graders at SD IT Madani)

This study aimed to describe the use of a visual dictionary in teaching English vocabulary to fourth-grade students at SD IT Madani and to explore students’ responses toward its use. This study employed a qualitative descriptive design involving two English teachers and five fourth-grade students. Data were collected through classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings showed that the visual dictionary was used through pictures and written vocabulary, followed by explanations of meaning and pronunciation, repetition, and classroom activities. The students responded positively to its use, reporting that pictures helped them understand and remember vocabulary more easily, made learning more enjoyable, and encouraged them to participate more actively in classroom activities. The teachers also reported that the visual dictionary supported students’ vocabulary understanding and retention, although some unfamiliar words still required additional explanations. Overall, the findings indicate that the visual dictionary supported vocabulary learning and created an interactive learning experience for fourth-grade students at SD IT Madani.
