Abstract

The study is entitled “Figurative Language and Social Context in “Coldplay” Song Lyrics”. The aims of this study are to find out the types of figurative language (metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, symbolism and litotes) and social context in Coldplay song lyrics. The writer used the qualitative research in which the data were served in written or oral form. Several steps namely listening, understanding, identifying, and classifying become the techniques of collecting data. The materials of this research were five songs in the latest album of Coldplay entitled ‘Kaleidoscope’ released in 2017. The result shows that there are twenty two lyrics containing six types of figurative language. Five of them are metaphors, three personifications, one simile, nine hyperboles, two symbolisms and two litotes. The dominant figurative language is hyperbole.
