Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore the relationship between religiosity and psychological well-being among elderly survivors of tsunami in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam. The study was carried out from July 2006 to February 2007 in several areas of Aceh affected by tsunami: Banda Aceh, Aceh Besar and Pidie. Data was collected from 134 respondents (66 men and 68 women) using two questionnaires: 5-Dimensions Religiosity Scale (5-D Scale) and the Psychological Well-Being Scale (PWBS). Demographic characteristics were also taken into consideration. Results indicate a significant relationship between religiosity and psychological well-being. Three dimensions of religiosity (religious practice, religious knowledge, and religious feeling) were found to be significantly correlated with psychological well-being, with correlation coefficients 1.204, 1.692, and 2.024 respectively. R-square 0.761 shows a relatively high contribution of those three dimensions of religiosity toward psychological well-being among elderly survivors of tsunami in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam.
