Abstract

Mathematics is the science that has strict building structure, consisting of the axioms, definitions, and theorems, with a logical structure. Analytical and logical thought processes play an important role in representing the structure of mathematical knowledge, so that in solving mathematical problems require aconscious mental processing of analytical and logical thought processes. Nevertheless, using only the analytical logical thought process alone does not always obtain are solution for the problem, because in solving problems sometimes necessary allegationsor claims of a statement without having to prove. Therefore there are different mental activities of formal cognition in operating activities of mathematics, including also in solving mathematical problem. Mental activity that is different from formal cognition is called intuitive cognition or intuition. Furthermore, each person has a different cognitive styles, including field independent and field dependent cognitive style, that is allowing his/her intuition has different way in solving divergent mathematical problem. In this research is focussed at cognitive style of field independent. Therefore, in solving divergent mathematical problems, the present of intuition is very important, because by using the intuition students can get creative ideas so that make them easy to find a variety of ways to find solutions. While the objectives ofthis study were to describe how the intuition of students with field independent of cognitive style work in solving divergent mathematical problem. Operating activities solving mathematical problems.
