Abstract

The research was accomplished to explore students' perception on English teacher stereotype and how English teacher stereotype impact the teaching learning process. This research was completed by using a qualitative approach. The participants were ten students of SMAN 7 Banda Aceh from different grade. Semi-structured interviews were used as the instrument to answer the research questions. From the result of the research, it was found that there were four stereotypes of English teacher based on student’s opinions. The first stereotype that often appeared was gender stereotype; students were more likely to choose female teachers than male teachers. This was due to the comfort provided by female teachers in the teaching and learning process. The second stereotype was age stereotype; This was a stereotype where students preferred young teachers than old teachers. Students assumed that young teachers were easier to regulate the atmosphere during the teaching and learning process, so it made students excited to study. Meanwhile, for race and religion stereotypes, the students did not feel any signification impacts on the teaching and learning process.
