Abstract

In this study, the researcher investigated the teachers' and students' perceptions of English extra class as well as explored their expectations about this program. The research was conducted at MAN 1 Aceh Barat and used Mix methods research. The samples for questionnnaire of this research are 50 students from the third
grade who joined in English extra class using a random sampling technique. The researcher also interviewed some of the students and teachers to know more their perspective and expectation. Based on the analysis, the researcher found that the teachers' and students' view toward English extra class, in general, gives a positive and negative effect. The positive effects are that the students' were more enthusiastic on English learning. Besides, the way of teacher's teaching is more relaxed, not focus on the syllabus, and the students can freely request the material that they will be learning. As a result, their English achievement increased.
However, the negative effect is the students' feeling that the English extra class makes them tired because it disposes of a lot of energy and mind. Meanwhile, their expectation for the English extra class is the right program to improve English skills, to get higher TOEFL score, to be easy to apply for the scholarship,
to speak well with the foreigner around the world. Besides, the main purpose to join English extra class is to face the hard question in National Examination (UN). Furthermore, base on result of this research, it is found that English extra class was succeed to give an effect to increase the students’ achievement in English.
Therefore, the school must make the new rules about time management to be well in this program in order to the student not feel tired while learning.
