Abstract

This research entitles Identifying Students’ Use of Prewriting Techniques in Writing Essay. This research is aimed to know the students’ type of prewriting technique in writing essays and students’ reasons for choosing the prewriting technique in writing essays. The researcher used the descriptive-qualitative method. The data collection was obtained by using interviews. Two questions were designed to discuss this topic. The questions were about what prewriting techniques that students use in writing essays and why do students choose the technique in writing essays. Ten students participated in this research. From the results, the researcher concluded that seven of ten participants chose brainstorming as a prewriting technique, two of ten participants chose mind mapping as a prewriting technique, and three of ten participants chose free writing as a prewriting technique in writing essays. The researcher also concluded that participants chose the technique because it was easier to use, understandable, suitable for participants, and has advantages in generating and
organizing ideas.
