Abstract

This thesis is entitled “An Error Analysis of the Punctuations in Students’ Writing (A Study at the Sixth Semester Students of English Department of UIN Ar-Raniry)”. It was designed to examine the use of punctuation errors in the writing of English Department Students. Sixth semester students were recruited assample of this research. To collect the data, the researcher applied mixed methods, writing test and interview. The results of this research showed that omission of commas were the most frequent errors made by the students (504 errors of commas made by 40 students). Furthermore, this research sought the causes of errors produced by the students. As a result, it was found that there were some factors influencing the students to make error in using punctuation: (1) Omission some of punctuation marks, (2) Lack of accuracy, (3) Misuse of using some marks such as question marks and commas before quotation marks,(4) Misunderstanding of the meaning of the text.
