Abstract

The study aims to analyze the types of idiomatic expressions contained in Kingsman: Golden Circle and to interpret the connotative meaning of these expressions. The researcher used Makkai's theory to address the set of research questions. This study is qualitative and employs a descriptive method. This study focuses on the Matthew Vaughn-directed film Kingsman: Golden Circle, which is based on the Kingsman comic book series by Dave Gibbons and Mark Millar. The data consisted of scenes including idiomatic expressions spoken by characters in the film Kingsman: The Golden Circle. In order to conclude, the data were classified and categorized during the analysis. The following are the research's findings: Kingsman: The Golden Circle movie has all six Makkai idiomatic expressions. Phrasal verbs are among the most common sorts of idiomatic expressions. Phrasal verbs occur 55 times (67%), Phrasal Compound Idiom 8 times (10%), Incorporating Verbs Idiom 7 times (9%), Pseudo-Idiom 5 times (6%), Tournure Idiom 5 times (6%), and Irreversible Binomial Idioms appear only once (1%). It can be concluded that Idioms are often found in English fiction, newspapers, or magazines or could also discover in movies. In addition, in understanding the context of the words in the movie, miscommunication and misunderstanding may occur because idiomatic expressions cannot be translated literally. The connotative meaning of idiomatic expressions can only be interpreted based on the context of the statements in the movie. So, in understanding its meaning, one should not only consult a dictionary of idioms but also consider the context of the sentence in which the expression occurs.
