Mukim has a strategic role in the settlement of disputes that occur in the Acehnese society. Disputes that failed to reach a peace agreement at the village level were brought to the mukim level to be resolved. The customary functionaries of the mukim namely Imeum Mukim and their instruments are required to be more creative and wise in giving a decision to any dispute submitted to him. However, its presence in the midst of society is still limited in so many ways that it affects the disputes that are being resolved. This study aims to determine the opportunities and challenges of mukim existence in the settlement of community disputes. The research method used is qualitative research method and analyzed by descriptive analysis. Data were obtained through imeum interviews of mukim. The study was conducted in Aceh Besar and Nagan Raya districts. The results show that the mukim has a great opportunity to develop it. Opportunities are seen in several things, namely: the existence of legal standing as a legal umbrella for mukim in carrying out its duties and functions. Whether regulated in law or regulated in Qanun can be a reference for mukim in developing its institutions, Prioritizing Forgiveness, Eliminating Resentment and providing justice for the parties. The challenge of mukim existence is the lack of adequate facilities, the lack of strengthening of human resources of Mukim, the existence of the national legal order, the prolonged conflict and the mistaken assumption against the customary court.
