Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the difficult steps for students in learning a language, and students find many difficulties in mastering the vocabulary. This study aims to identify the difficulties and causes of students' difficulties in mastering English vocabulary, as well as to find out the teacher's attempt to help the student's difficulties. This study used a qualitative and quantitative approach to distributing questionnaires to students, observation, and interviewing the English teacher of class 2C at MTsS Oemar Diyan. The analysis results were students' difficulties in mastering English vocabulary, including choosing the correct vocabulary when speaking, lack of vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling difficulties, and long words. The cause of the students' difficulties was that they rarely repeated the vocabulary being taught and were lazy to open the dictionary when they did not know the vocabulary they wanted to use. Furthermore, the efforts made by the teacher to assist students in improving their English vocabulary mastery are the teacher using 1). Explanation, 2). Giving new vocabulary, 3). Vocabulary repetition, 4). Asking the question, and 5). Checking the dictionary. In addition, the teacher checks the dictionary at certain times, distributes new vocabulary according to the material at each meeting, conducts listening activities, and links difficult-to-remember vocabulary into a sentence to make it easy for students to understand.
