This article is intended to describe and analyse any related literature about kinship system in general including its origins, definitions, types, degrees, classifications as well as the terms used in kinship systems. The results from literature review show that the kinship system is formed through nuclear and extended family. Besides, the descent also plays an important role in determining the kinship system which is then known as patrilineal, matrilineal and bilineal. Among the three, however, patrilineal is the most common kinship system adopted by individual’s family in order to trace the family membership through his or her father’s lineage
