Abstract

Chitosan is able to be one of the solutions to reduce heavy metal pollution, because it can bind heavy metal ions by utilizing hydroxyl groups and amines found in chitosan. This study aims to determine the mass ability and contact time of adsorption of Al metal ions by chitosan from tiger shrimp (Peneaus monodon) shells. Chitosan is made from tiger shrimp shells taken from the Lampulo fish market, Banda Aceh. The method used in chitosan isolation is deproteinization, decalcification, decolorization and deacetylation. Then chitosan was characterized by FTIR. Al solution of Al2(SO4)3.18H2O at concentrations of 2, 6 and 10 ppm was used as a pollutant. Chitosan mass variation used is 0,25, 0,75 dan 1,25 g. The variation of contact time used is 1, 2 dan 3 hour. Al metal content in chitosan is then analyzed using the AAS (atomic absorption spectrophotometry). The results showed the mass of chitosan 0,25, 0,75 dan 1,25 g each have an adsorption effectiveness of 1,155, 0,3732 dan 0,2313 mg/g, while the contact time is 1,2 dan 3 jam each have an adsorption effectiveness of 0,0527, 0,0528 dan 0,0538 mg/g. Based on this it can be concluded that chitosan can absorb Al metal ions.
