Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the correlation between English department students' TOEFL scores and their subject scores (i.e., Advanced Listening, Grammar and Communication, and Academic Reading), along with the factors that caused the students not to reach the target score in their TOEFL test. A mixed approach was designed for this study. The data was gathered through archival data from Language Development Center (LDC) and the English department office, and the researcher collected the interview data with English students. The participants in this research were English department students from batch 2016 who failed in TOEFL test. Thirty English students took part in collecting the archival data, and four of them participated in the interview. The participants were selected deliberately based on criteria for archival data and random sampling for a semi-structured interview. The researcher analyzed the student data using SPSS software. The result of archival data showed no correlation between listening TOEFL and advanced listening scores and between reading TOEFL scores and academic reading scores. Nevertheless, there is a positive correlation between structure TOEFL scores and grammar & communication scores. The interview result showed four factors that caused students to fail the TOEFL test. There are fewer basic skills, less practice, less motivation, and poor time management.
