Abstract

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students face numerous challenges when it comes to writing of academic papers in English. Artificial intelligence, as a popular technological product has grown in favor as a cutting-edge tool, especially among EFL students. However, the usage of Artificial Intelligence in Academic Writing provide both benefits and Challenges. The study aimed at understanding the EFL students’ attitude on the use of Artificial Intelligence in academic writing. This study used a qualitative method and gathered data through semi-structured interviews. Ten interviewees, specifically students from the academic year 2019, were purposively selected as the respondents. The data was analyzed based on Creswell’s framework. The findings revealed that Articial Intelligence has a positive attitude on their academic writing, with an overall its usage. Also there are six themes that can be gathered from the data, including improving grammar, assisting in sentence construction, assisting in text paraphrasing, enhancing vocabulary, assisting in finding topics, time efficacy. However, some students encountered difficulties with the laziness, creating dependency, uncreative information, and plagiarism when using Artificial Intelligence. While the majority of students reported that Artificial Intelligence had a positive attitude on improving their English Academic Writing skills
