Abstract

English teachers might use teacher’s strategies to boost the students’ engagement in EFL classroom. This study aims to explore the strategies used by English teachers in Banda Aceh. There are two questions to be solved in this study. The first research question is what strategies are used to boost the students’ engagement in English class. How teachers promote student-centered learning style in classroom through the use of the strategies. The preceding research questions are answered using qualitative approach. There are 5 EFL teachers in Banda Aceh who are the participants of this study. The findings reveal that all English teachers use strategies to keep students’ engaged in classroom. Teachers teach the students in line with the aptitude level of the students. Activities, discussion, influence, question and answer at the end of the lecture, and problem solving are also provided by the instructor. Regarding the way teachers promote student centered learning is by asking students to share their perspectives to one another. To conclude, teachers’ strategies are important in EFL classroom to keep the students engaged and to center the students during the instructional process.
