Abstract

This study aims to find out the stages of concern of students’ writing in introduction of the thesis proposal and the level of use using rhetorical. The rhetorical structure of the Swales’ CARS model, consists of three moves; Establishing the territory (Move 1), Establishing the Niche (Move 2) and Occupying the Niche (Move 3). In findings of the student’s understanding of writing introductions, this study used the questionnaire to gather information from 30 EFL students and interview ten students. This study analyzed four BA thesis proposals by EFL students. The results showed that students’ stages of concern in writing introduction of thesis proposal is their lack of understanding in writing introduction. It can be understood from the result of the questionnaire that the highest stage is consequences while the lowest is the stage of refocusing. In general, students did not know the model or method that they used in their introduction to write the thesis proposal. That is why students did not aware and less concerned about writing introductions in thesis proposals. From analyzed documents, it revealed that the student’s ability in writing introductions was “good”. However, the interviews analyzed show that most students experience difficulties in writing the introductions, especially in finding the gap and the right structure.
