Abstract
This study aims to explain teachers' strategies in building students' confidence in speaking and explore students' perceptions of the strategies teachers apply. Using qualitative methods, the analysis of the results was explained in narrative elaboration and description. The results were formed based on the interview data. Interviews were conducted with 6 students from advanced classes (so-called "superior classes") and 2 English teachers who taught in class XI IPA, located at Man 1 Pidie. This study found that teachers implemented 5 strategies in building students' self-confidence in speaking, including: 1) Discussing in peers and groups, 2) Using YouTube and Making videos, 3) Implementing positive feedback, motivation and correction, 4) Assigning presentations and 5) Applying Code-Mixing. Students perceived the teacher's strategy can increase their interest in learning public speaking. Then, the positive feedback that teachers provided encourages them to speak. The variations in teachers' strategies have a positive effect on students' self-confidence. By applying varied methods, students admitted that their self-confidence was better than before. It can be proved from their actions, who no longer refuse every time the teacher asks them to speak or present in front of their classmates.
