Abstract

This research aims to investigate whether the use of Comic Strips can improve students' vocabulary in English. Vocabulary mastery is an important component in mastering a language, but many students have difficulty remembering new vocabulary due to the lack of interesting learning methods. To overcome this problem, Comic Strips, which are known for their visuals and relevant contexts, are used as teaching media. This research was conducted using a pre-experimental method, specifically a one-group Pre-test and post-test design. Participants consisted of 32 students from Class XI IS 2 at MAN 3 Banda Aceh. The students were given a Pre-test to measure their initial vocabulary knowledge, followed by a series of lessons using selected Comic Strips from the Instagram account @whatsupbeanie. After the treatment, a post-test was given to evaluate vocabulary improvement. The findings revealed that the use of Comic Strips significantly improved students' vocabulary mastery. According to the calculation steps, the t count value is -12.407, while the t table value for df is 31 and α is 0.05 (one-way test) is around 1.6955. Because the tcount value (-11.997) is outside the acceptance criteria (tcount ≥ ttable), then H0 is rejected and Ha accepted. Thus, it can be concluded that Comic Strips can significantly improve the vocabulary of MAN 3 Banda Aceh students. In conclusion, the results of this research underscore the potential of Comic Strips to provide an engaging and effective learning experience for students. By combining visual and textual elements, Comic Strips create a context that facilitates retention of new vocabulary. These findings suggest that educators should consider incorporating Comic Strips into their teaching strategies to foster students’ vocabulary development.
