Abstract
This study aims to explore the student's challenges and strategies in answering the TOEFL test. It is a descriptive study that employed the schema of the qualitative approach. The participants were ten students of the English department of Ar- raniry Islamic University batch 2016. The participants were selected using the purposive sampling technique. This study used interviews as the data collection technique. The findings show that four major challenges are faced by students in answering the TOEFL test, they are, problems related English competency skills, problem-related psychological conditions, problem-related healthy conditions, and problem-related technical issues. As for the strategies used by students to overcome the challenges in the TOEFL test. In the listening section consist of focusing on the second speaker, avoiding similar sounds, and focusing on the whole conversation. In the reading section consist of skimming and scanning, later reading the question first. And lastly for the structure strategies consist of finding subject-agreement and matching-unmatching sentences.
