Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the challenges and identify effective learning strategies in teaching English to students with special needs in secondary high schools at SLBN Banda Aceh. Two English teachers who teach students with hearing impairments, visual impairments, and autism participated in this research. This research uses a qualitative approach, with data collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations. The results of the study showed that the challenges faced by teachers varied according to the type of special needs of the students. For students with hearing impairments, limitations in sign language proficiency and the lack of visual media were main the obstacles. To address this, the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) strategy was implemented. In contrast, students with visual impairments, materials were adapted auditorily, using multisensory methods, audio players, Braille, and tactile boards. For students with autism, difficulties in attention and communication are addressed through structured teaching, flexible learning times, and material adaptation based on interests. This study highlights the importance of adaptive learning methods, individual support, and specialized media to improve the effectiveness of English language teaching for students with special needs.
