Abstract

Pesantren is the oldest educational system in Indonesia that integrates Islamic and Indonesian values while playing an important role in shaping morality and character. In Aceh, pesantren is known as Dayah, which not only teaches religious knowledge but also instills local wisdom such as mutual cooperation, deliberation, and mutual respect. However, incidents of physical and verbal violence in some pesantren have tarnished their image and disrupted the educational process. This study aims to understand the integration of tradition and modernity at Pesantren Terpadu Al Mujaddid in Sabang City in preventing violence, the role of local wisdom strategies in handling cases and the perceptions of parents. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed, involving Al Mujaddid leaders, student caregivers, teachers, students, and parents. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and autoethnography, then analyzed through reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the integration of tradition and modernity is carried out through technology based supervision, communication with parents, online savings traditions, as well as regular deliberation and evaluation. Violence handling relies on local wisdom such as duek pakat, suloh as a deterrent, and diet when suloh reaches a dead end. Parents perceptions are highly positive, as this system is considered effective in preventing violence while strengthening relationships with the pesantren. This study contributes to the development of a model that integrates tradition and modernity based on local wisdom, which is relevant to be applied by other islamic boarding school (pesantren) in Indonesia. The results affirm the importance of adaptive Islamic educational innovations to preserve pesantren’s role as a sustainable moral development institution.
