Abstract
This study investigated significant differences in speaking proficiency between introverted and extroverted students and determined the factors contributing to these differences. This study employed a quantitative causal-comparative design. The data were collected through a personality questionnaire, students’ speaking factors questionnaire, and students’ speaking achievement. The personality questionnaire was formulated by Deci and Ryan’s theory and used to classify students into introvert and extrovert types. A total of 39 students participated as respondents through purposive sampling. The data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman’s Correlation. The findings showed that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was rejected because the p-value was 0.522, which was higher than the significance level of 0.05. This means that the null hypothesis (H0) was accepted, indicating that personality type did not significantly affect students’ speaking ability between introvert and extrovert students. In addition, the result showed that introverted students obtained higher speaking scores than extroverted students. The factors contributing to this difference were confidence, motivation, speaking practice, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Therefore, these findings suggest that both introverted and extroverted students have comparable potential to succeed in speaking English.
