Comparative Analysis of Speech Styles in Two Enola Holmes Movies (Enola Holmes & Enola Holmes 2)

This study investigates the speech styles employed by Enola Holmes in Enola Holmes (2020) and Enola Holmes 2 (2022). The objectives of this study are to identify the types of speech styles employed by Enola Holmes and to compare the similarities and differences in her speech styles between the two films, including the dominant speech style in each film. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach supported by frequency counts and percentages to describe and compare the distribution of speech styles. The data consisted of Enola Holmes' utterances taken from the dialogues of the two films. The data were collected through documentation and analyzed based on Martin Joos' (1967) theory of speech styles, which classifies speech styles into five categories: Frozen, Formal, Consultative, Casual, and Intimate. The findings show that four of the five speech styles were identified in both films, namely Formal, Consultative, Casual, and Intimate, while Frozen Style was not found. In Enola Holmes (2020), 297 utterances were identified, consisting of 67 Formal (22.56%), 179 Consultative (60.27%), 45 Casual (15.15%), and 6 Intimate (2.02%) utterances. In Enola Holmes 2 (2022), 360 utterances were identified, comprising 74 Formal (20.56%), 257 Consultative (70.56%), 29 Casual (8.06%), and 3 Intimate (0.83%) utterances. Consultative Style was the dominant style in both films, increasing from 60.27% in the first film to 70.56% in the second. The comparison also reveals that the two films share the same four speech styles and the absence of Frozen Style, while differences can be observed in their frequency and communicative functions. Formal Style increased in frequency from 67 to 74 utterances, although its proportion decreased, while Casual and Intimate Styles decreased in both frequency and proportion. These findings indicate that Enola's speech styles vary across the two films while maintaining Consultative Style as the dominant form of communication, particularly in investigative, problem-solving, and information-exchange interactions.
