Abstract

This study aimed to determine the ability of eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Ingin Jaya to arrange English sentences correctly. This study employed a quantitative descriptive research design. The participants were 30 eighth-grade students in the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through a sentence arrangement test consisting of 20 items. The students were required to rearrange jumbled words into meaningful and grammatically correct English sentences. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including the mean score, highest and lowest scores, percentage of achievement, and students’ ability categories. The results showed that the highest score was 20, the lowest score was 2, and the mean score was 16 out of 20, equivalent to 80%, which was categorized as good. In terms of ability categories, 19 students (63.3%) were classified as very good, 9 students (30.0%) as good, 1 student (3.3%) as fair, no students (0.0%) as poor, and 1 student (3.3%) as very poor. Overall, 28 students (93.3%) achieved good or very good levels. These findings indicate that most eighth-grade students had a good ability to arrange English sentences and demonstrated an adequate understanding of basic English sentence structures. However, some students still experienced difficulties and required additional practice and guidance. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to provide continuous sentence arrangement exercises and grammatical instruction to improve students’ accuracy in constructing English sentences.
