Using Chatgpt In Writing Minor Thesis: Influencing Factors and Academic Honesty

This study aims to explore the factors influencing students’ use of ChatGPT in writing their minor theses and to understand how students adapt its use to obey academic honesty. The study uses a qualitative case study design involving eight students from the English Language Education Department at UIN Ar-Raniry who have experience using ChatGPT to write their minor theses. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically. The finding of the study show several influencing factors that encourage students to use ChatGPT in academic writing, including language assistance, idea generation and cognitive support, efficiency and time management, and learning and emotional support. Students use ChatGPT to improve their writing, develop ideas, manage their workload, and overcome difficulties during the writing process. The findings also show thatstudentsadapt their use of ChatGPT to improve academic honesty by verifying AI-generated information, revising and personalizing AI-generated responses, and using ChatGPT responsibly.They verified information against credible sources, evaluated AI-generated suggestions, and remained responsible for their own academic work. The study concludes that students use ChatGPT in minor thesis writing for various purposes, while adapting its use through critical evaluation and responsible practices. Students tend to be responsible for the accuracy, originality, and quality of their academic work.
