Abstract

Shark are one type of the common fishes that potentially contaminated by heavy metals. This occurs due to widely distributed and play an important role as the apex predator in the aquatic food chain. However, information underlying the heavy metal content in sharks from Indonesia waters is still very rare. Therefore, this study aims to quantify the concentration of heavy metals (Pb, Hg, Cu and Cd) and estimate the maximum tolerable intake of Pelagic Thresher (Alopias pelagicus) and Sliteye Shark (Loxodon macrorhinus) for oral consumption. Heavy metal content of twenty fillets samples from both Pelagic Thresher and Sliteye Shark were analyzed with the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry method. The morphometric conditions of the shark measured were limited to the total length. The potential human health risks due to consumption of the sharks was assessed by estimating Maximum Tolerable Intake (MTI). Results of this study showed that, from 20 samples of Pelagic Thresher and Sliteye Shark genes examined, the presence of Pb, Cu and Cd was not detected. Otherwise, 60% of the total sharks examined (both Pelagic Thresher and Sliteye Shark) were detected to contain Hg. The average content of Hg in Pelagic Thresher was 0,147 0,255 mg/kg while in Sliteye Shark was 0,118 0,215 mg/kg. The maximum tolerable intake of Pelagic Thresher meat that can be consumed by adults and children within a week according to SNI were 1.690 kg/week and 0.507 kg/week, respectively. Meanwhile, the maximum tolerable intake of Sliteye Shark meat that can be consumed by adults and children within a week according to SNI are 2.112 kg /week and 0.633 kg /week, respectively.
