Abstract

In English grammar, one of clauses that important to be learnt was relative clause because it plays an important role in a language which made students easily produce a complex sentence and understand about the sentence. This study was conducted to investigate the student’s error in using relative clause in narrative text. The population of this research were the third grade students of SMA 5 Banda Aceh which consist 240 students which were divided into eight classes. However, 60 students from two classes XII MIA-1 and XII MIA-2 were choosen by the researcher as the sample of this study. This study used descriptive qualitative method. Document analysis was used to collect the data where the researcher handed out paper test to each students which consists of fill in the blank questions in order to find out number of errors made by students by using relative clause in narrative text. The result of the analysis showed that the highest percentage of error that students made was “whose” with percentage 79% errors. The error in using relative clause “where” were 70% errors, then following with “whom”, “when” and “which” with each percentage 67% errors, 63% errors and 61% errors.While the lowest percentage of error was “who” with 48% errors. The result found that both classes have different difficulties in understanding relative clause, XII MIA-1 had problem in “where” and “when”, while XII MIA-3 had problem in “whose”.
