Abstract

Writing is one of important aspects in English that should be mastered by the students. Teachers’ technique in teaching writing is very important to improve the students’ ability in writing. One of the techniques that can be used by the teacher is daily journal which can motivate the students in learning writing. Therefore, the writer conducts a study about “Students’ Writing Competence In Writing Daily Journal (An Experimental Research at the Second Year Students of Senior High School of Darul Ulum Banda Aceh)”. The purposes of this study are to find out the effectiveness use of daily journal improves the students' writing competence and to find out students' response toward the use of daily journal in writing. The sample of this study was the second year students of MAS Darul Ulum. Pre experimental design was used to collect the data, in which test and questionnaire were the main data collection techniques. Pre test was given in the first meeting before the students are taught by using daily journal, meanwhile post test was given in the last meeting after the students were taught by using daily journal. Then, the data was analyzed by using statistical calculation. As the result, this study showed that using daily journal could improve students’ ability in writing. It was proven by the difference of mean score between pre-test (M=46) and post-test (M=92.6) which indicates that the students’ writing competence have improved after the treatment was given. Moreover, according to the questionnaire analysis, most of the students (73.3%) gave positive responses toward the use of daily journal. Finally, the writer concludes that daily journal is one of techniques which can be used in order to improve the students’ competence in writing.
