Abstract

This research aimed to study about teaching strategies used in teaching English to young learner. The qualitative method was used in this study to gather the information about common teaching strategies used in teaching English, the difficulties encountered by teachers, and the solutions provided to overcome these difficulties. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the participants and five teachers participated in this study. The result show that there are five strategies frequently used by teachers while teaching English to young learner, namely using flashcard, singing a song, playing a game, using word card and learning by doing. This strategy had an impact on young learners’ English skill and their motivation to learn. On the other hand, teachers faced a number of difficulties when implementing these strategies such as lack of availability of media needed by teachers, managing the young learners, and limited time. This study also discovered the solutions to dealing with these difficulties such as making smalls group work, making the conducive situation, making the learning media, and using familiar rhythm in the song
