Abstract

This study aimed to analyse the types of code-switching along with the function of the occurrence of code-switching in Speak English Today podcast episodes, especially in four episodes of the English Today series uploaded in 2021 that focused on vocabulary. The object of this study was the utterances of two hosts of the podcast who regularly switched their languages between English and Indonesian. This study used descriptive qualitative. The analysis of the type of code-switching that occurred in the podcast used Poplack's (1980) theory. Whereas for functions of code-switching adopted Hoffman (1991). The result of this study showed all of the three types of code-switching in this podcast, those are 1) tag switching, 2) inter-sentential switching, and 3) intra-sentential switching. The functions of code-switching also entirely occurred in the podcast studied, included: 1) talking about a particular topic, 2) quoting somebody else, 3) showing empathy about something, 4) expressing group identity, 5) interjection, 6) repetition used for clarification, and 7) intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor.
