Abstract

Figurative language as one of the intrinsic elements in a novel is usually used to the beauty of a literary work, condenses the author's narrative, and can create specific feelings and atmospheres. This study aims to find the most dominant types of comparative figurative language used in the novel "The Stranger in The Lifeboat" by Mitch Albom. This study used a qualitative approach with content analysis method so that the research question can be answered descriptively. The data collected through documentation method with the written source of the novel The Stranger in the Lifeboat by Mitch Albom. The comparative figurative language analysed by using theory of Tarigan (2009). In this study, the researcher found that 8 out of 10 comparative figurative language used in the novel namely simile, metaphor, personification, antithesis, pleonasm, periphrasis, anticipation and correction. Meanwhile the other two, namely allegory and depersonification, are not used in this novel. Of the 182 sentences data containing comparative figurative language, similes dominate with a frequency of 72 sentences (39.6%). It can be concluded that the most frequent type of comparative figurative language used in the novel is simile.
