Abstract
This course provides an introduction to discourse analysis. It emphasizes on how reason operates in actual discourse, which is particularly concerned with the way in which texts are structured in dialectical reasoning to their social, political, and cultural contexts. In this course, the term 'discourse' covers as both a) language beyond the sentence level, and b) language use in the context of fields—politic, religion, law, business, science, and the arts. Considering the relevance to and practicality for the era of industrial revolution 4.0 and the Outcome Based Curriculum (OBE) that require Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and application in professional jobs, this course focuses mainly on argumentative discourse which now unfolds in our daily social life. It particularly applies the Toulmin model as an analytical tool in analysis. As this course uses the Outcome Based Education model and applies the principles of learning freedom, students are also encouraged to study other approaches in their own interest.
