Abstract
This study aims to investigate socio-cultural and educational factors that influence students' interest in learning English. This research uses a qualitative approach. Data were collected using interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Participants in this study were six students who were identified as low achieving student and one English teacher who taught in grade V of SDN 9 Lut Tawar. The results of this study revealed that there are several factors that influence students in learning English. Students' interest in learning English is influenced by intrinsic factors, such as enjoyment of the sound of the language, as well as external factors, such as exposure to global culture through music, media, and social platforms. Students' attitudes towards learning English show that many consider it difficult, both in terms of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. In addition, fear and shame of peer assessment are major obstacles that hinder active participation. The quality of learning is also affected by limited facilities, which are considered less appropriate to students' needs in the real world. The socio-cultural context, the dominance of regional languages in students' daily lives presents its own challenges, as well as the lack of a supportive environment, is an obstacle for students in internalizing English.
