Abstract
This research aims to explore the perceived impact of teaching practicum on students' interest in pursuing a teaching career. The study identifies key issues in the background, including the challenges faced by students during teaching practicums, such as classroom management, cultural barriers, and low teacher salaries, which may influence their interest in becoming teachers. The research employed a qualitative method, utilizing semi-structured interviews with five 8th-semester students from the Department of English Language Education at UIN Ar-Raniry who had completed their international teaching practicum. The findings reveal that teaching practicums significantly influence students' professional and personal development. While some students expressed increased motivation and respect for the teaching profession, others experienced doubts due to the demanding nature of the profession and economic concerns. Positive mentorship, peer support, and real-world teaching experiences were identified as critical factors in fostering students’ interest and confidence. However, language and cultural barriers were highlighted as major challenges during the practicum. In conclusion, the teaching practicum serves as a transformative experience, providing students with valuable skills and insights into the teaching profession. Nonetheless, addressing the challenges and supporting students with better preparation and resources is essential to maximize the benefits of the program and encourage long-term interest in teaching careers.
