Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between verbal bullying and students self confidence at SMP N 1 Baitussalam. The research is driven by phenomenon of verbal bullying that still frequently occurs in the school environment with various student responses and has the potential to affect their self confidence. Thus study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The population of this study consisted of all students in grades VII-3, with a total sample of 31 student selected usiang a purposive sampling technique. The instrument used was a Likert scale questionnaire to measure the level of verbal bullying and student’s self confidence. The result of the descriptive analysis showed that the level of verbal bullying was mostly in the medium category, with 23 students, followed by 6 students in the high category adn 2 student in the low category. Meanwhile, student self confidence was also dominates by the medium categoty, with 22 sudent, followed by 4 students in the high category and 5 students in the low category. Based on the correlationn test, a brief significance value of 0,000 < 0, 05 was obtained, indicating a significant relationship between verbal bullying and students self confidence. The correlation coefficient value of -,683 indicates that the relationship between the two variables is in the strong category with a negative direction. This means that the higher the level of verbal bullying experienced by students, the lower their level of self confidence. It can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between verbal bullying and the level of self confidence of students at SMP N 1 Baitussalam.
