Abstract

Although code-switching on social media has been widely studied, limited attention has been given to gender-based differences in the frequency and types of Indonesian–English code-switching within online sports communities. This study addressed this gap by comparing code-switching instances produced by male and female users in replies to @BadmintonTalk posts on X and identifying the most frequently used type. The study employed a non-experimental descriptive quantitative design using content analysis. A total of 160 replies were purposively selected from two posts and classified according to Poplack’s three types of code- switching. The analysis identified 162 instances, with female users accounting for 101 instances (62.35%) and male users accounting for 61 instances (37.65%). The analysis also identified three types of code-switching, namely inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential switching, and tag switching, with intra-sentential switching being the most frequently used type by both gender with total 105 instances (64.8%), followed by inter-sentential switching with 43 instances (26.5%) and tag-switching with 14 instances (8.6%).These findings indicate that female users contributed more code-switching instances and that intra-sentential switching was dominant within the selected data.
