An Educational Analysis of Social-emotional Learning (Sel) Portrayed in turning Red Movie

Turning Red (2022) is an animated movie directed by Domee Shi that portrays the emotional and social development of adolescents through the experiences of its main character, Mei Lee. The movie presents various situations that reflect the competencies of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), making it a meaningful educational medium. This study aims to identify the SEL competencies portrayed in Turning Red based on the CASEL framework and to examine how peer relationships contribute to the development of these competencies. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design using documentation as the data collection technique. The data consisted of scenes, dialogues, actions, and emotional expressions collected by repeatedly watching the movie and recording relevant information using a documentation sheet. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings identified 25 data representing the five core SEL competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. The results show that all five competencies are portrayed through Mei Lee's emotional and social development. Furthermore, peer relationships play an important role in strengthening these competencies by providing emotional support, cooperation, empathy, and opportunities for positive communication. Therefore, Turning Red can be considered an educational movie that effectively promotes Social-Emotional Learning among adolescents.
