Abstract
Grammar is one of the most difficult aspects for learners to master. Students’ knowledge of grammar is implicit; they are competent in grammar but they do not necessarily know the different rules behind the use of grammar. Hence, for teaching grammar effectively, students need to be equipped with effective strategies to help them improve their grammar skill. Code switching is one of strategies that teacher may use in his or her class. The current study investigates one possible reason, namely code-switching in teaching grammar. Concerning to this problem, I conducted a research entitled “Teacher’s Code-Switching in Grammar Class at SMA Islam Al Mujaddid”. This research examined What kind of code-switching used in the grammar class. Furthermore, it also looks into What are the functions of codeswitching applied in the grammar class. The research was conducted at SMA Al Mujaddid Sabang. This research is a qualitative research and it used observation and interview to collect the data. The participant of this research was an English teacher of that school. The result of this research showed the types of code switching which was used very often by teacher in teaching grammar were inter-sentensial codeswitching and intra-sentensial code-switching and the teacher’s purposes of using code switching in classroom were explanation, translation, efficiency, motivation, and discipline.
