Abstract
The field of discourse analysis has been developing rapidly with a variety of approaches. This book is derived from a number of articles I have published in the last fifteen years in the field. The book thus adapts several approaches to discourse analysis in analyzing text and talk. As an interdisciplinary approach to discourse, the book applies: critical discourse analysis, argumentation theory, cultural political economy, and the epistemological boundaries of opinion, knowledge and ideology. To apply the theoretical framework into practice, texts for analysis were selected from the database of political economic speeches, newspaper editorials, and Opinion-Editorials about critical social issues. By using a set of analytical tools from systemic functional linguistics, argumentation, intertextuality, and other linguistic resources, the author analyzes the texts uncovering ideology embedded in discourse, strategies used in global economy during the financial crisis, national identity, anti-pornography bill, and the debate on Islam, modernity, and feminism. The chapters covered in this book are all based upon the theoretical claim that discourse is an element of social life which is dialectically interconnected with other elements, and may have constructive and transformative effects on other elements. It also makes the claim that discourse has in many ways become a more salient and potent element of social life in the contemporary world, and that more general processes of current social change often seem to be initiated and driven by changes in discourse. Discourse analysis, including linguistic analysis, therefore has a great deal more to contribute to social research than has generally been recognized, especially when integrated into interdisciplinary research projects. Many teachers, students in advanced English language, discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis, political economy, and media studies and even general readers will find this text as a valuable book.
