Abstract
This study investigates the synchronisation between the English handbook and lesson plans used in Malaysian secondary education at Level 4 SPM.. Specifically, it examines the lesson plans created by English education students from UIN Ar-Raniry during their teaching practicum in Malaysia. The aim is to assess how well these lesson plans align with the official curriculum as outlined in the English handbook published by the Ministry of Education Malaysia. A qualitative method was applied, involving document analysis and interviews. The primary sources of data included one official English handbook and seven lesson plans designed by practicum students. Thematic coding and cross-referencing methodology were employed to compare components such as learning objectives, teaching methods, assessment strategies, and competencies. In addition, interviews with three student teachers were conducted to identify the challenges faced during lesson planning. The results indicate several areas of misalignment, particularly in learning objectives, teaching methods, and targeted competencies. The assessment strategies showed relatively stronger consistency with the handbook. The key factors contributing to the discrepancies include a lack of guidance from mentor teachers, reliance on pre-existing lesson plan templates, and limited practicum duration. This study highlights the need for more structured supervision and deeper engagement with the curriculum during lesson planning. Recommendations are proposed for both mentor teachers and student teachers to ensure better alignment between teaching materials and planning practices, ultimately improving instructional quality and curriculum implementation.
