Abstract

This study examines the use of pejorative terms by PBI students on the social media platform Instagram. The objective of this study is to identify the pejorative terms utilized and the changes in meaning that occur within the context of social media. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method to examine the use of pejorative terms by PBI students on Instagram. The data was collected from 10 Instagram accounts of PBI students through observation and the documentation of pejorative terms in captions and comments in the form of screenshots. The analysis was conducted through the observation of the use of pejorative terms in the context of captions and comments on Instagram accounts. The findings of the study indicate that PBI students utilize ten pejorative terms, including “red flag,” “ghosting,” “cringe,” “toxic,” “karen,” “dry text,” “trust issue,” “salty,” “pick me,” and “roasting.” The analysis demonstrates that the original meanings of these terms have undergone a change, becoming more negative or pejorative in the context of social media. The findings of this research show that the use of pejorative terms on social media is a phenomenon that warrants further investigation and attention. It is crucial for social media users, particularly PBI students, to comprehend the negative implications of these terms and utilize language that is more polite and ethical in online communication.
