Exploring EFL Students’ Challenges in Determining Research Problems for Skripsi

Identifying a research problem is one of the most important and challenging stages in writing a thesis, especially for students learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Many EFL students experience difficulties in defining a clear and focused research problem due to language barriers, limited research experience, and insufficient academic guidance. This study aims to explore the challenges faced by EFL students in determining research problems for their skripsi, the factors contributing to these challenges, and the strategies used by students to overcome them. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design with a case study approach. The participants were four students from the 2022 cohort of the English Education program. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews to gain in-depth insights into the students’ experiences. The data were analyzed using qualitative data analysis procedures, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that students struggled with narrowing topics, understanding academic journals, selecting research methods, and receiving adequate supervision. These challenges were influenced by limited English proficiency, lack of research experience, and limited consultation time. To cope with these difficulties, students discussed ideas with peers, read previous skripsi, consulted supervisors, and carefully reviewed academic journals.
